For Me, Sharing Clothes With Loved Ones Deepens Connection
Briefly

The relationship with an older sister influences feelings of self-image through clothing. Initially, wearing her clothes creates happiness and confidence. As time passes, the sister distanced herself, leading to emotional discomfort. The author cherishes memories associated with her sister's garments, highlighting a conflict between attachment and pain. Later, the author finds comfort in her husband's clothing, finding solace and connection in wearing his clothes during difficult times. This reflects a continuing theme of how clothing can carry emotional significance and shape one’s self-perception.
I grew up dying to wear my older sister's clothes. She was nearly four years older than I was, with lush black hair to her waist, and her lashes the size of pond fronds.
Years later, my sister's personality changed along with her style. She didn't want to share clothes with me anymore—or lives.
I still have the shimmering blue earrings and necklace that were hers before they were mine. To throw them out or give them away would mean I was giving her away.
I love my husband's clothes. I steal his t-shirts, which are much cooler than mine, and though we really are together 24/7 most days, I love that extra bit of him around me.
