Hyphenating a name after marriage posed challenges due to initials. A maiden name, Khorey, held significant family history and personal identity. The desire to keep Khorey was intertwined with preserving heritage and familial ties. At the same time, adopting the husband's name, Khanna, represented a merging of histories and identities. Initially, hyphenation seemed to be the ideal solution, despite potential complications with name length and initials.
Khorey represented a lot of family history. It also belonged to me. My grandparents on the Khorey side had married across immigrant groups.
For years, hyphenating seemed like the right and only choice. I wanted to keep my last name, Khorey, to carry forward its unique family legacy.
