Belk has announced a return to in-office work for its corporate employees after nearly three years of remote work due to the pandemic. The decision, influenced by the need to boost collaboration and productivity, will see employees working three days a week at its headquarters. Although details on the reasons, number of affected employees, and start date remain unclear, Belk's change reflects a broader trend as employers tackle high office vacancy rates in the Charlotte metro area. Previously, Belk had supported remote work due to improvements in productivity and communication during the pandemic.
Belk is calling its corporate employees back to the Charlotte office after going completely remote since the start of the pandemic.
Working in-person together more frequently will help with collaboration and productivity, Belk spokeswoman Jessica Rohlik told The Charlotte Observer on Monday.
The move comes as Charlotte metro's office vacancy rate hits 24.6% at the end of last year, which is part of a broader trend many employers are navigating.
Belk had about 1,200 corporate office employees, but Rohlik declined to say how many corporate employees Belk has now.
