The Philippines is introducing a digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to live in the country for a year with renewal options. The visa aims to attract individuals who can prove sufficient income, health insurance, and a clean criminal record. It is restricted to those employed by non-local companies. Unlike its Asian counterparts, the Philippines offers a lower cost of living and a favorable language environment, which may boost its tourism sector post-pandemic. This initiative reflects a broader trend to accommodate the growing remote work culture.
"Allowing digital nomads the opportunity to stay longer in the country will spur tourism activities and increase visitor spending," tourism secretary Christina Frasco said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure.
The visa is available for workers who can show that they make sufficient income to support themselves, have appropriate health insurance, and have no criminal record.
