The 2026 Retirement Index ranks countries where a couple can live comfortably on as low as $2,000 per month. The index is in its 35th year and uses input from hundreds of on-the-ground editors and correspondents worldwide. Countries are scored across seven categories: Housing, Visas & Benefits, Cost of Living, Healthcare, Development & Governance, Climate, and an Affinity Rating that functions as a mini happiness index for expat social integration. The top 10 for 2026 combines European cultural hubs with Central and South American outdoor destinations, and the number one country changed for the first time in six years.
