House Republicans have passed legislation offering significant tax breaks to wealthy Americans and corporations while proposing major cuts to Medicaid and federal nutrition programs. Despite Democratic attempts to amend the bill to close loopholes and ensure that benefits do not disproportionately favor the rich, Republicans rejected these amendments. The Joint Committee on Taxation's analysis underscores that the tax changes would mainly benefit the wealthiest, essentially prioritizing the affluent over low- and middle-income families, amplifying existing wealth disparities.
"At every turn, Republicans voted down amendments designed to prevent the majority of benefits of their tax bill from flowing to rich people," Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) said after the vote.
The nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation released a distributional analysis showing that the Republican tax bill would disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans while doing little for low- to middle-income families.
