China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, focusing on strategic cooperation. This visit comes after Ukraine and Russia's tentative ceasefire agreement, amidst increasing tensions highlighted by US President Trump's comments. Despite its claimed neutrality, China has been providing diplomatic and economic backing to Russia during the Ukraine conflict. Chinese officials reiterated the importance of dialogue, framing China-Russia relations as independent of external influences, thereby showcasing China's strategic positioning in global geopolitics and its relationship with Russia.
At a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China’s relationship with Russia 'does not target a third party and should not be affected by any third party.'
Wang is due to meet Lavrov on Tuesday, with talks expected to cover strategic cooperation and international issues, according to Chinese officials.
Trump claimed 'we're making a lot of progress,' his remarks also revealed growing tensions within NATO, including strained relations with Canada.
The visit comes just days after Ukraine and Russia agreed in principle to a limited ceasefire, after conversations with US President Donald Trump.
