Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi announced intentions to initiate discussions for forming a unity government as pressure escalates over the ongoing crisis in eastern Congo. The M23 rebels, alleged to be backed by Rwanda, have made significant territorial gains, including capturing key cities like Goma and Bukavu, resulting in substantial casualties. Tshisekedi emphasized the importance of uniting political factions despite his previous resistance to negotiations with the rebels. The international community, notably the UN Security Council, has called for M23 to cease hostilities and retreat from captured areas, intensifying the call for stability in the region.
"I lost the battle and not the war. I must reach out to everyone including the opposition. There will be a government of national unity," said Tshisekedi.
The UN Security Council passed a unanimous resolution Friday demanding that the 'M23 immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from all areas that it controls' and 'fully reverse the establishment of illegitimate parallel administrations in the DRC territory.'
Fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels has fanned fears of a wider regional war, as the conflict intensifies with increasing pressure from international leaders.
