The European Union's General Court has ruled that a famous Ukrainian phrase, "Russian warship, go f*** yourself," cannot be trademarked because it serves as a political slogan.
The court noted that the phrase had been used extensively in a non-commercial context, indicating it wouldn't be recognized by the public as a brand for products.
The slogan became a symbol of defiance for Ukrainians, arising from a confrontation between border guards and Russian forces during the early invasion.
The initiative to trademark the phrase by Ukraine's State Border Guard Service since 2022 has faced multiple rejections from both the EU General Court and the EU Intellectual Property Office.
