"Ninety percent of the centre is flattened," said mayor Tamaz Gambarashvili. The destruction in Vovchansk has deepened, with the city center almost entirely reduced to rubble as the relentless shelling continues, affecting what little remains of the community's infrastructure and daily life.
"The sheer pace of the destruction dwarfed that of even Bakhmut," Lieutenant Denys Yaroslavsky stated. His comparison of the rapid devastation in Vovchansk to that of Bakhmut highlights the unprecedented speed with which the city was obliterated, marking a new level of tragedy in the ongoing conflict.
Before the war, Vovchansk had a population of about 20,000. Its industrial landscape and educational institutions, including a medical school, have all but vanished, existing only in the memories of survivors who fled the violence.
Analysis from Bellingcat revealed that six out of ten buildings in Vovchansk were totally destroyed, showcasing the extensive damage inflicted not just on the structures but on the community and its future.
