Nearly half a million Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine since the invasion began more than four years ago, based on an estimate from the head of Britain’s electronic intelligence agency. The estimate is higher than a recent figure of 352,000 derived from probate records. New intelligence indicates Russian forces have been moving backward on the battlefield inside Ukraine for the first time since late 2022. Ukraine aims to raise Russian killed and seriously wounded numbers above Russia’s recruitment capacity to slow territorial losses in eastern areas. Western estimates place Russian casualties at about 30,000 per month in April, with 15,000 to 20,000 killed. Russia continues attempts to capture Donbas, while recruitment is estimated at roughly 800 to 1,000 per day. GCHQ also focuses on degrading the Russian threat to the UK and Europe, including protecting data and energy flows.
"The high casualty rates reflect Russia's continued attempts to capture the eastern Donbas region, as demanded by President Vladimir Putin. Exact recruitment figures are hard to obtain but the economist Janis Kluge estimated Russia was recruiting around 800 to 1,000 a day, between 25,000 and 31,000 a month. Keast-Butler told an audience at Bletchley Park that GCHQ was working tirelessly to degrade and reduce the Russian threat to the UK and in Europe, warning that Russia was relentlessly targeting Britain's infrastructure and democracy."
