As the war in Ukraine continues, Russian forces are utilizing donkeys to transport ammunition and supplies to front-line units due to logistical challenges. Pro-Kremlin media has documented instances where these animals are being employed, with military bloggers citing a shortage of vehicles as a key reason for their use. Although the Defense Ministry hasn’t confirmed this practice, officials have publicly supported it, indicating an adaptation to the resource strains the ongoing conflict presents, as Russia's economy increasingly pivots to defense production.
"The guys in one of the directions were given a donkey for logistics. A real donkey," wrote one military blogger.
"What did you expect? Vehicles are in short supply these days!" wrote another Russian commentator, Kirill Federov.
"There's nothing wrong with this," Viktor Sobolev, a member of the State Duma's defense committee, told the Russian outlet Gazeta.
Several Russian officials publicly defended the practice when the images went viral among military bloggers.
