Trump hopes for ceasefire progress in Russia-Ukraine war in Monday calls with Putin and Zelensky
Briefly

President Trump is engaging in separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in hopes of achieving a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine war. This initiative, framed as a test of Trump's dealmaker reputation, faces skepticism over his perceived affinity for Putin. Critics, including former US ambassador Bridget Brink, warn that Trump's approach may favor Russia and undermine Ukraine's position, expressing concern over potential appeasement rather than a fair resolution. Trump's strategy includes outreach to NATO leaders as well, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.
"His sensibilities are that he's got to get on the phone with President Putin, and that is going to clear up some of the logjam and get us to the place that we need to get to," said Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff. "I think it's going to be a very successful call."
"I believe that peace at any price is not peace at all," Brink said. "It's appeasement and as we know from history, appeasement only leads to more war."
