"I realized that I couldn't bear loneliness and that somewhere, there was a small child who was also alone and needed a mother, a home and everything a family can offer. I can give love, and I want to take care of someone," says Olha from Sumy in northeastern Ukraine. After losing her son, she decided to adopt a girl to fill the void of loneliness and loss.
"If I had a big family, I would have support," Olha reflects. This sentiment captures the deep need for family support in times of grief, especially following the loss of her son, Maksym.
Vasyl Luzyk, the head of the National Social Service, noted a significant drop in adoption rates at the onset of the war but encourages hope as the numbers began to rise in subsequent years."
Tatjana expresses a common desire among adoptive families, stating, "We always wanted to be one big family. I think that's how all adoption stories start." This highlights the universal longing for family connection.
