Ukraine war briefing: Zelenskyy replaces head of general staff of the armed forces
Briefly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Andriy Gnatov as the new chief of the general staff of the armed forces to improve combat effectiveness. His predecessor, Anatoliy Bargylevych, has taken on the role of chief inspector at the defense ministry. The restructuring aims to integrate lessons learned from the battlefield into military planning. Simultaneously, France's President Emmanuel Macron has stated that territorial concessions from Ukraine cannot occur without security guarantees, amid rising tensions and continued Russian aggression, including drone attacks on Kyiv.
Zelenskyy emphasized Gnatov's combat experience, stating, 'His task is to bring more combat experience. Everything that our brigades have learned from the war should be implemented 100% at the planning level.'
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov remarked on the transformation of Ukraine's armed forces: 'We are systematically transforming the armed forces of Ukraine to enhance their combat effectiveness.'
Macron declared: 'Under no circumstances can the Ukrainians make territorial concessions without having any security guarantees.' He noted Russia's escalation indicates a lack of sincere peace intentions.
Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism for the upcoming discussion between Trump and Putin: 'I think the two presidents are going to have a really good and positive discussion this week.'
