Anti-LGBTQ+ attacks on the rise in Los Angeles: report
Briefly

The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations reported a 24% increase in hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, with overall hate incidents rising to 821 in 2023. Notably, gender-motivated crimes surged, with 40 of 55 targeting transgender individuals. The report emphasizes the importance of understanding both hate crimes and incidents, urging proactive reporting to challenge systemic inequalities. The rise in sexual orientation incidents further highlights discrimination, accounting for 17% of total reported incidents. A key goal of the report is to elevate awareness of these violations of human rights.
Hate incidents can be just as traumatic for victims as hate crimes, and can perpetuate systemic inequality; so all of us must report them, not accept them as 'normal,' said Robin Toma, LACCHR's executive director.
Hate crimes are violations of state and federal laws, and both hate crimes and hate incidents are serious breaches of international human rights standards, stated Robert Sowell, LACCHR's assistant executive director.
