Governor Gavin Newsom of California has shifted his stance on trans inclusion in women's sports, now declaring it a matter of fairness. This statement stands in stark contrast to his previous efforts to champion LGBTQ+ rights, including signing protections into law. In a discussion on his podcast with Charlie Kirk, Newsom expressed agreement with concerns surrounding the fairness issue in sports, highlighting a growing divide within the Democratic Party. Newsom's comments coincide with recent anti-trans policies under the Trump administration, including a new executive order banning trans women from participating in women’s sports.
"I think it's an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness - it's deeply unfair," Newsom said of trans inclusion in sport.
"I totally agree with you. ... I revere sports. So, the issue of fairness is completely legit."
The order detailing the sports ban, titled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports", was signed on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Newsom has previously been a staunch supporter of trans and wider LGBTQ+ rights, having criticised drag bans and signed protections for LGBTQ+ youth into law.
