Two Spirit and Third Gender: More than entertainment * Oregon ArtsWatch
Briefly

The art installation "Two Spirit: Dual Natures Indigenous Drag Perspectives on Climate Change" at Western Oregon University's Cannon Gallery combines costume and performance to raise awareness about climate change's impact on Native and Two Spirit communities. Created by Luca Fitzgerald and Anakoni Baker, the exhibition spans three acts depicting historical harmony, colonial exploitation, and the current climate crisis. Curator Jessica Rehfield aims to foster understanding through this unique narrative experience. The exhibition runs from April 4 to May 2, with performances every Friday, showcasing cultural heritage through artistic expression.
The installation is a collection of designed and created costumes centered as set pieces, which tell this story in three parts. The costumes were developed alongside a narrative that the artists and I developed together. They each have a specific heritage, so each of the costumes reflect part of their cultural background and storytelling aspects of their identities.
Drag is not only entertainment, it is artistic protest that demands Queer people be seen and acknowledged. Luca Fitzgerald and Anakoni Baker are taking the stage and the art community with them as they share these experiences.
