Berkeley Art Center names new director amid 'financial difficulties'

Gisela Insuaste, an Oakland-based Latine artist, has been appointed the new executive director of the Berkeley Art Center after previous leadership departed due to financial struggles. Insuaste aims to enhance fiscal stability and intends to uplift diverse voices and ensure sustainability. With almost 20 years in the arts scene, she plans to creatively expand membership and seek new funding sources post-pandemic. Currently, she and a gallery manager are the only staff members amid ongoing organizational transitions. Insuaste believes in the importance of maintaining visibility and the transformative potential of art.
