Gisela Insuaste, an Oakland-based Latine artist, has been appointed the new executive director of the Berkeley Art Center after previous leadership departed due to financial struggles. Insuaste aims to enhance fiscal stability and intends to uplift diverse voices and ensure sustainability. With almost 20 years in the arts scene, she plans to creatively expand membership and seek new funding sources post-pandemic. Currently, she and a gallery manager are the only staff members amid ongoing organizational transitions. Insuaste believes in the importance of maintaining visibility and the transformative potential of art.
Insuaste stated, "Art is a tool for social change and an opportunity for healing, for cultivating creativity, and for intergenerational and cultural connections."
Insuaste brings nearly 20 years of experience in arts programming in cultural and educational institutions across the country. Her goal is to uplift diverse voices and create a more sustainable organization.
