Bill Fay, Cult Singer-Songwriter, Dead at 81
Briefly

Bill Fay, a British cult singer-songwriter, died at 81 in London. Known for his deeply moving songs, Fay initially struggled commercially but gained a cult following in the 1990s. He released key albums with Dead Oceans, including 'Life is People' (2012) and 'Countless Branches' (2020). Despite his passing, the label hopes to complete an unfinished album he was working on. Fellow musician Jeff Tweedy described Fay's music as elegantly simple, emphasizing its heartfelt authenticity and lasting beauty.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Fay, who died peacefully this morning (February 21st) in London, aged 81.
Our hope is to find a way to finish and release it, but for now, we remember Bill's legacy as the 'man in the corner of the room at the piano', who quietly wrote heartfelt songs.
There's a simplicity and an elegance to it. You immediately recognise this is something uncut by ambition and fashion; it's just somebody humbly adding their voice.
Bill was a gentle man and a gentleman, wise beyond our times. He was a private person with the biggest of hearts.
