Legendary San Francisco bar and venue closes after over 60 years
Briefly

Edinburgh Castle, a landmark bar in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, closed its doors after a run beginning in 1959. Owned by Tay Kim since 1999, the closure followed a foreclosure by U.S. Bank due to unpaid loans. The bar was recognized for its unique features, including an indoor smoking room, and served as a filming location and a hub for the arts, especially punk music in the early 2000s. Despite hosting events post-pandemic, the bar ended on a note of nostalgia and concern for its future.
"In the early 2000's when I was finally old enough to attend bar shows, Edinburgh was one of the best spots for underground music in the entire city..."
"Really sad to see it go... Hopefully whoever takes it over does something remotely cool with the space, but I won't hold my breath."
