Thee Parkside, a Potrero Hill music venue and dive bar, could close after 25 years as its building is being sold to a new landlord. The property at 1600 17th St. is in contract and in escrow after a buyer signed paperwork to purchase it for nearly $1.33 million. The original owner died earlier this year. Longtime tenant Malia Spanyol held first rights to buy at the $1.3 million asking price but could not afford it; a prospective restaurant-industry buyer who sought to preserve the venue was outbid by an unknown developer. The venue's future is uncertain and demolition is expected. Thee Parkside is known for punk, metal and country shows, tater tots, and a dog-friendly patio. Spanyol may attempt to reopen the venue elsewhere. Another historic San Francisco punk bar recently closed after more than 60 years.

Spanyol, who has run the iconic punk venue since 2007, told Mission Local that as the longtime tenant, she had first rights to buy the building for the asking price of $1.3 million. While she couldn't afford it herself, she found someone in the restaurant industry willing to buy her business and the building to keep Thee Parkside going. However, they were outbid by an unknown developer.
