Who Is a 'Back to the Future' Musical For?
Briefly

'Back to the Future: The Musical' struggles with its overly serious approach and lengthy ballads, failing to engage audiences familiar with the original film's charm. Although Lucas Hallauer brilliantly embodies Marty McFly, and some musical numbers such as 'Gotta Start Somewhere' are highlights, the overall production's earnest tone detracts from its enjoyment. Special effects with the DeLorean receive praise, and the climax succeeds in thrilling the audience, but critics question whether it's worth enduring the slower parts for the payoff. The production runs through March 9 at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco.
Instead, we get George McFly, looking through binoculars in a tree, somberly singing that 'My myopia is my utopia.' It's a problem of earnestness.
Marty McFly, Lucas Hallauer mimics Michael J. Fox's mannerisms and speaking style with astounding accuracy; he moves, scoots and squeaks just like Fox.
Gotta Start Somewhere, sung by Cartreze Tucker as the diner custodian and future Hill Valley mayor Goldie Wilson, steals the show.
The special effects with the DeLorean, naturally, are dazzling; at one point I thought it would fly off the stage and over the seats.
