Santa Barbara County is taking preventive measures for the upcoming Deltopia celebration by closing beaches in Isla Vista from Friday to Monday. This decision is a response to concerns from past events, particularly Floatopia in 2009, which overwhelmed local resources and left significant cleanup challenges. Since 2010, the beaches have been closed annually during the first weekend of April to curb the chaotic gatherings associated with the student party culture. Officials emphasize that Deltopia is not a sanctioned event, highlighting the safety risks involved.
Santa Barbara County announced Wednesday it will use county Code Section 26-11 to shut down beaches over the weekend in Isla Vista, where Deltopia is set to occur.
This year's number of drunken and debauched attendees trumped those of years past, may have spelled success for some, but created a nightmare for the county.
