Parents are expressing distress after discovering that many children underwent unnecessary hip dysplasia surgeries in Irish hospitals. Between 2021 and 2023, 561 children have been recalled for independent assessments, with some not possessing the condition at all. Sinn Féin's leader highlighted parents’ frustrations over lack of responsive communication from the HSE, exacerbating their emotional turmoil. The Taoiseach acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, revealing an ongoing audit, and emphasized the trauma inflicted on families due to potential misdiagnoses and incorrect surgical interventions.
There would be anger if it turned out that operations were carried out when they were not needed, Micheál Martin said.
Many cried bitterly because of their suffering. One house had two siblings operated upon, while one child had both hips separately made the subject of surgery.
