The Los Gatos Planning Commission has recommended a mixed-use development featuring 30 homes near Los Gatos High School, amid rising concerns over student safety. Principal Dave Poetzinger highlighted congestion and potential hazards at the intersection close to the school, where near-misses are common. Plans include affordable housing and retail spaces, along with restrictions on construction vehicle access during peak school hours. However, even with these provisions, the principal remains apprehensive about student safety, shedding light on the challenges posed by increased traffic in the area.
"I feel like it's pushed to the breaking point on a daily basis when you see the number of cars and the interactions between the movement of bikes, pedestrians (and) e-bikes as they come through there," said Poetzinger.
Commissioner Susan Burnett expressed her concerns over student safety, stating, "This project could exacerbate the already congested area during peak drop-off and pick-up times."
The mixed-use housing development includes plans for 30 condos, aimed at providing affordable housing while addressing traffic and safety issues related to the high school.
"I'm grateful for the development amendments, like the ban on construction vehicles during peak hours, but my primary concern remains student safety," said Poetzinger.
