Insook and Kwangduk Kim emigrated from Korea to San Francisco in 1979 and opened Balboa Green Garden Florist on Valentine's Day 1980. Insook had no prior florist experience but was drawn to flowers due to their emotional benefits. Despite early struggles with cultural and language barriers, the couple persevered and eventually garnered a loyal customer base. As they prepare for retirement, they will hand the shop over to new owners, marking an end of an era while reflecting on their joyful journey in the floral business.
"Everybody loves flowers. When they look at flowers, they feel calm and relaxed and happy. Sometimes after the market, my husband buys all kinds of fresh flowers. Ah, that makes me feel good."
"On a foggy night, Insook was haunted by the sound of the long, bellowing foghorns. I felt so lonesome. I missed my mom, who stayed in Korea alone while Insook was in San Francisco."
