Voters in San Mateo County will determine the fate of Measure A, which would enable the Board of Supervisors to remove Sheriff Christina Corpus from office for various misconduct allegations. This comes amidst a backdrop of claims against Corpus, including abuse of power and misconduct. Critics argue the measure undermines democracy and serves as a power grab by the supervisors. If approved, the supervisors would retain this removal authority until 2028, the end of Corpus' current term, which she denies any wrongdoing associated with the allegations.
"If voters approve Measure A, the county charter would be amended to allow supervisors to remove the sheriff for cause, defined as: violation of any law related to the performance of sheriff's duties, flagrant neglect, misappropriation of public funds, willful falsification of statements, or obstruction of inquiries into the sheriff's conduct."
"There was a mad rush to do this, and it's undemocratic. You're basically canceling out the vote of people," the sheriff told ABC7 News.
"It's a slippery slope. There's no end to it. And quite frankly, it's clear that the state of California never intended for a district elected Board of Supervisors to have an immediate mechanism to remove a countywide sheriff," said Dan Stegink, a Pacifica resident.
Measure A gives supervisors the authority to remove the sheriff until 2028, the end of Corpus' term, who was elected in January 2023 and faces numerous allegations of misconduct.
