California's educators are mobilizing for better contracts as unionized teachers coordinate across districts impacting over a million students. Amidst rising living costs and staffing shortages, the California Teachers Association aims to address key issues such as improved wages, smaller class sizes, and adequate resources. With many districts facing budget constraints, individual negotiations are challenging. Yet, synchronized contract expirations on June 30 in major districts could amplify bargaining pressure and drive improvements for teachers and students alike.
We have a staffing crisis, and it's worst in areas where teachers are needed the most. If we want to fully staff our schools, we need a living wage.
Under the plan, announced this week by the California Teachers Association, roughly 77,000 educators in 32 districts will bargain for contracts around a shared set of core issues: improved wages, smaller class sizes.
