Bass ousts L.A. fire chief, saying LAFD needs 'new leadership'

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has terminated Fire Chief Kristin Crowley amid criticism regarding her handling of the Palisades fire. Mayor Bass stated that Crowley's refusal to keep available firefighters on duty and her noncompliance with an investigation directive were key factors in her dismissal. An investigation revealed mismanagement of emergency personnel, as 1,000 firefighters were sent home instead of being deployed amid escalating fire conditions. Ronnie Villanueva, a retired chief deputy, has been appointed interim fire chief during this transition.
Acting in the best interests of Los Angeles' public safety, and for the operations of the Los Angeles Fire Department, I have removed Kristin Crowley as Fire Chief.
Furthermore, a necessary step to an investigation was the President of the Fire Commission telling Chief Crowley to do an after action report on the fires. The Chief refused.
