Chuck Todd advised Kamala Harris to take a step back from immediate political ambitions, calling for her to focus on smaller public roles instead. He expressed skepticism about her potential run for governor of California, stating that it would hinder any future presidential aspirations in 2028. Todd believes California voters may be looking for new leadership, which could complicate her chances against current Governor Gavin Newsom. He suggested that Harris should invest her energy into rebuilding Los Angeles and engaging in less prominent community efforts before aiming for a national stage in the future.
If she wants to run for president in '28, you can't run for governor of California in '26, so I do think if she runs for governor, she's made the decision she's not running.
Governor is the one place where voters won't always vote their jersey color, and I think voters are going to be looking for somebody from the outside.
If I were advising her, I'd tell her: go throw yourself into the rebuild of LA and get involved in smaller public roles.
I think it's a tough place for her to be. I could see an outsider Democrat being able to message this.
