House Republican leaders are pushing for a spending bill to be approved solely by Republican votes, an unusual move reflecting partisan tensions. The legislation proposes approximately $892.5 billion for defense and $708 billion for non-defense, falling below previously established fiscal caps. However, Democratic leaders have signaled strong opposition, particularly concerning Medicaid funding, which they have termed a redline. As the bill moves to the Senate, it will require bipartisan support to pass, adding to the stakes of a potential government shutdown.
"Medicaid is our redline," they wrote in a Dear Colleague letter.
"We are about $7 billion dollars below FY 2024 levels," the GOP aide told reporters.
