Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner stated, "I do not believe this is in the best interest of our city," after voting to rescind a 1% food and beverage tax for homelessness services.
Commissioner David Suarez argued that the referendum was "purposely engineered to mislead and take advantage of taxpayer money" and characterized it as an unfair transfer from taxpayers to a county organization.
After the City Commission's controversial vote, it was confirmed that ballots would still display Referendum 8, but notices would inform voters that results would not count.
Despite having over 20,000 ballots cast prior to the decision, Mayor Meiner expressed dissatisfaction, saying, "It’s not a decision I take lightly, but I stand against the tax."
