In response to safety concerns raised by residents of Great Oaks Parkway, San Jose officials are planning to designate certain neighborhoods as "no return zones" for homeless encampments. Residents expressed fear due to crime and safety incidents related to nearby camps. Mayor Matt Mahan promised that once a 150-bed temporary housing site opens, the encampments will be removed. Despite past delays, officials aim to address the issue with increased emergency housing and the deployment of police to prevent the return of homeless individuals to these zones.
"It's become dangerous for our members living in that area, they have to keep their blinds shut because homeless are peeking in. They're stealing their water, they're threatening and a lot of them don't even know what they're doing," Patty Fishburn, a member of San Jose Action, told San José Spotlight.
After those sites open and we get people into those sites we are decommissioning encampments," Mahan said Monday.
