San Mateo County Supervisor Jackie Speier is advocating for stricter oversight on county spending after Sheriff Christina Corpus's attempt to purchase 10 massage chairs raised concerns. Speier proposes a resolution for quarterly reports on all county purchases, aiming to enhance accountability and transparency. Currently, only contracts exceeding $200,000 require board approval, leaving smaller expenditures unreported. Speier noted dissatisfaction with the sheriff's absence during discussions of a $4.2 million expenditure for radio upgrades. Past purchases by Corpus include soft-serve ice cream machines and an expensive conference room table, prompting further scrutiny of spending practices.
It creates transparency and accountability," Speier told the Post.
Speier said she wanted 'a wholesale look' into procurement procedures by all county departments.
The chairs were purchased to support the wellbeing of the employees who work long hours protecting and serving the community.
At the time, county Supervisor David Canepa said it may be the most expensive table in San Mateo County's history.
