Downtown First Thursday celebrated its one-year anniversary with around 18,000 attendees, emphasizing its role in revitalizing downtown amidst empty streets. Organizer Manny Yekutiel asserted that the event’s purpose was met by drawing crowds consistently. The initiative, launched by the Civic Joy Fund, has been funded through December 2025, ensuring its continuity. Mayor Daniel Lurie took the opportunity to address ongoing drug issues in San Francisco, announcing recent arrests and emphasizing a strong partnership between law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office, showcasing a dual focus on community engagement and crime control.
"It's brought people downtown, which was the point of it," says organizer Manny Yekutiel, noting the event's success despite concerns about downtown being empty.
"We will continue to go after those who deal drugs on our streets every single day," said Mayor Lurie, addressing ongoing drug issues in the city.
"My office has filed charges against all nine of those individuals for drug dealing and one for solicitation of a minor to engage in drug dealing," noted DA Brooke Jenkins.
Yekutiel announced at the event that DFT is now funded through December 2025, ensuring its continuation and the community engagement it fosters.
