Drivers heading to Lake Tahoe for skiing this weekend should brace for challenging conditions due to winter storms. The National Weather Service highlights a momentary relief on Saturday into early Sunday, but travel conditions remain hazardous before and after this window. Continuous snow is expected, particularly impacting routes like U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 80, where chains are mandatory for non-four-wheel drive vehicles. The expected snowfall could worsen road conditions significantly, making travel difficult or even impossible in some areas.
At this time, probably the best window we have is Saturday into the early portions of Sunday. It's kind of when we get a break between storms.
Major storms are moving through the Lake Tahoe region throughout the week and into the weekend. The area is under a winter storm warning from Wednesday night to late Thursday.
You could see another additional 6 or 8 inches [of snow] right along the Sierra Crest passes, so there could still be some travel issues into Friday with that system coming in.
Currently, chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires in multiple areas on Interstate 80 from Northern California into the Sierra Nevada.
