For SF Giants' Matos, refined mechanics, approach fueling hot streak
"ST. LOUIS - The Giants have transformed into an offensive juggernaut over the last two weeks, and Luis Matos has had no small role in that success. Since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 21, Matos is hitting .400/.429/.711 with three home runs, eight RBIs and 11 runs scored over 12 games. In his fourth game back, Matos led the Giants to a win over the Milwaukee Brewers by hitting a two-run homer in the second, then scoring the go-ahead run on a single by Heliot Ramos in the ninth."
"One tweak Matos made was moving up in the batter's box to be closer to the pitchers, which he believes allows him to capitalize on middle-inside pitches. Matos was 29 inches behind the front edge of home plate in July, but in September, he's moved up to 22.1 inches. Matos has also significantly widened his base. In July, his feet were 42 inches apart on average. In September, that distance has expanded to 48.6 inches."
Luis Matos returned from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 21 and has erupted offensively, hitting .400/.429/.711 with three homers, eight RBIs and 11 runs in 12 games. He delivered a two-run homer and later scored the go-ahead run in a win over the Brewers. Matos began the season as a platoon option against left-handed pitching and was optioned twice before receiving extended playing time after Mike Yastrzemski's trade. He altered his approach by moving closer to the plate, widening his stance to use his legs and hands better, and adopting a permanent two-strike plan to improve timing and contact.
