Despite recent economic hardships reflected in a declining S&P 500, San Francisco's cultural scene persists with events like the debut performance of Japanese saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu. His recent concert at The Great American Music Hall attracted a crowd eager to experience his unique blend of free jazz. Accompanied by collaborator Ray Kunimoto, Shimizu's performance evoked a sense of joy and continuity in the Bay Area's artistic community, serving as a reminder of resilience amid tumultuous times.
The Great American Music Hall was packed Monday night with just about every record store clerk in the greater Northern California area who'd flocked to see Japanese legend Yasuaki Shimizu for his San Francisco debut.
Shimizu took the stage, standing confidently in front of a table full of effects pedals, belting out a patchwork of free jazz sax melodies, which were looped and distorted by collaborator Ray Kunimoto.
