A NASA-led study has identified areas of California, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, that are sinking, making them more susceptible to rising sea levels. The research anticipates that by 2050, sea levels could rise more than double previous predictions in these locations. The sinking, primarily caused by human activities, leads to significant ground subsidence, resulting in potentially devastating impacts such as neighborhood inundation in San Rafael. NASA scientists employed satellite radar to analyze the vertical land movement along over a thousand miles of coastline, revealing pressing vulnerabilities.
In many parts of the world, like the reclaimed ground beneath San Francisco, the land is moving down faster than the sea itself is going up.
Over the next 25 years, ground sinking could result in more than a foot of sea level rise in and around Los Angeles.
