Ritual Coffee Roasters announced the closure of its Haight-Ashbury cafe after nine years, with the last day set for April 11. Founder Eileen Rinaldi explained that the decision stemmed from a mix of issues, chiefly the decline in tourists since the pandemic, which has diminished foot traffic in the area. Additionally, high commercial rents and the need for substantial sales volume to sustain operations contributed to the closure. While the Haight location will close, Ritual continues to operate in other areas and is exploring new locations for growth.
It wasn't any one thing. It was a combination of things that added up to us feeling like it was time to close.
Pre-pandemic, there would always be a tourist in the middle of Central [Avenue], and that person just isn't coming to SF right now.
