David Chiu, the San Francisco City Attorney, stated, "We are already seeing traveler confusion around the use of Oakland's new name. This was entirely predictable and preventable. We have tried to reason with Oakland officials to avoid litigation and come up with alternative names that would work for all of us. Unfortunately, those efforts were not productive, and we have no choice but to ask the court to step in and protect our trademark."
San Francisco's lawsuit highlights the traveler confusion caused by the new airport name, which has led some individuals to book flights to SFO instead of Oakland, hampering travel logistics.
The Oakland Board of Commissioners approved the name change, arguing that their new designation will increase geographical awareness and enhance the airport's market reach within the top 20 U.S. markets.
"San Francisco claims the Oakland name change infringes on its airport's trademark and has caused confusion among travelers, impacting customer experience and operational efficiency," an official spokesperson explained.
