Mayor Daniel Lurie picked Deputy Chief Derrick Lew as San Francisco’s new police chief and expressed confidence in Lew’s responsibility and commitment to public safety. Lew is a San Francisco native with more than two decades in the SFPD, having served at Ingleside, Bayview, Mission, and Central Stations. Lew oversaw drug enforcement through the Drug Market Agency Coordination Center and most recently led the Field Operations Bureau as deputy chief. Lew described leading the SFPD as an honor and stated priorities to recruit more officers, attack the drug crisis, improve street conditions, and maintain city safety.
