Sunset Dunes Park will implement a new design with two zones: a Park Zone focused on calm activities like walking and picnics, and a Multi-Use Zone for cyclists and other mobility users. The Park Zone allows non-motorized bikes ridden by children, while the Multi-Use Zone encourages keeping to the right. Temporary signs and pavement stencils will be installed for guidance, enhancing safety as children return to school. The city is also conducting a survey to gather community input on park improvements.
The changes will create two clearly defined zones: a Park Zone on the west side and a Multi-Use Zone on the east side. The Park Zone will be calm, designed for walking, yoga, play, and picnics. Non-motorized bikes will be welcome if ridden by children. The Multi-Use Zone will accommodate cyclists, runners, walkers, and e-bikes. Users will be guided to keep to their right side to create predictable movement. Pedestrians will always have the right of way at crosswalks.
Temporary signs will be installed on light poles and A-frames, and park rangers will be on-site to answer questions. Additionally, pavement stencils will be added at intersections with markings such as 'Yield,' 'Shared Pathway,' and 'Look.' SFMTA is expected to complete the stencil work in approximately four to six weeks.
The parks department emphasized that clearer guidance on where people should walk, bike, or drive will make it easier for everyone to share the space, helping kids travel to school more safely and ensuring parks remain vibrant public places.
The city is conducting a survey to gather input on what the community wants in the park as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance Sunset Dunes.
