Mayor Daniel Lurie has proposed to significantly increase the size of a Bayview homeless shelter while eliminating RV parking spots, prompting District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton to assert that this approach is inequitable. Originally envisioned as a mix of tiny homes and RV spaces, the shelter is now intended to become a large facility with over 200 beds. Walton criticized the lack of diverse shelter options across San Francisco, emphasizing the concentration of resources in under-served areas while neglecting others, particularly the Westside.
"How are you going to expand something in Bayview Hunters Point when we're talking about equitably providing shelter across the city?" asked Walton.
"It was supposed to be a hybrid, a mixture of folks living in tiny homes, living in vehicles," said Walton. But now, the site may become one of the largest city-run shelters in San Francisco.
"Show me the plan for them," Walton said. "If it's a San Francisco problem, why place folks disproportionately in one area?"
