"What I'll tell you is that in recent weeks I've met with both Trent and with his agent, Vincent Taylor, and had really good, productive and substantive meetings. And so, here's what I know. Trent loves being a Niner. We love having Trent as a Niner and it's up to us to figure that out and to thread that needle. There are some unique circumstances in that we all know what Trent is as a player, how great of a player he's been. He's going to be 38 years old and so there's some things that go into that, but I think we're all on the same page and feel very positive about where that's going."
"At the end of the season, Williams told ESPN he was expecting the team to do some maneuvering with his contract, probably in the form of a short extension that would provide him further guarantees and give the team some additional cap relief for 2026."
The San Francisco 49ers face pressure to resolve Trent Williams' contract situation before the early free agent negotiating window opens in 13 days. Williams is in the final year of his deal with a $38.84 million salary cap number, including a $22.21 million base salary and a $10 million option bonus due soon. While ESPN reported the two sides were struggling to find a solution, 49ers GM John Lynch expressed optimism about reaching an agreement. Lynch stated both parties have had productive meetings and share mutual desire to continue their relationship. Williams, who will be 38 years old, and the team are exploring a short-term extension that would provide him additional guarantees while offering the 49ers cap relief for 2026. The contract currently contains no guaranteed money remaining and three void years beyond the current season.
