William Eklund, a forward for the San Jose Sharks, is vying for a spot on Sweden's IIHF World Championship roster. After being omitted from the recent 4 Nations Face-Off, he expressed a strong desire to wear Sweden's jersey in May, particularly as the tournament is in his hometown, Stockholm. Despite a past lack of national team appearances due to cancellations, Eklund is having a productive NHL season, boasting significant points and ice time, positioning himself as a serious contender for future international games, including potential participation in the Winter Olympics.
"It's been a while, so it would be cool to go," Eklund said of the tournament.
Eklund last played for Sweden at the 2022 World Junior championships, which were canceled because of an outbreak of positive COVID-19 cases.
