"Bird flu is spreading. The avian influenza virus H5N1 has been recorded around the world - in poultry, in wild birds and in mammals, including humans."
"So, should we be worried about a potential new pandemic? And what can we do about it? This animation looks at what science says so far."
The avian influenza virus H5N1 has been detected worldwide in poultry, wild birds, and mammal species, including humans. Ongoing spread increases the chance of additional cross-species transmissions and the evolution of variants with greater human transmissibility. Rigorous surveillance, rapid genomic sequencing, and transparent international reporting are needed to monitor viral changes. Strengthened biosecurity in poultry production, targeted vaccination strategies, and public-health preparedness can reduce spillover and limit spread. Coordinated global response capacity and early detection are critical to contain outbreaks and reduce the risk of a pandemic.
