Human beings can only realistically colonize other planets through generations committed to lifelong journeys. In contrast to the destructive Earthworld, Shipworld prioritizes preservation and sustainability. Over 360 years towards the habitable planet HD-40307g, descendants of the original pioneers face numerous challenges and tragedies, yet also experience innovation and joy. In a separate narrative, Kesta, a scientist in post-zombie apocalypse London, is fervently searching for a vaccine despite keeping her infected husband drugged and imprisoned, which explores dramatic depths of love and desperation amidst a grotesque backdrop.
The only realistic way human beings could colonise planets beyond our solar system is if they spent their lives travelling and committed their children and grandchildren to the same fate.
On Earthworld, success was measured in terms of expansion and exploitation, but on Shipworld, survival depends on preservation, recycling and austerity.
During 360 years of travel to planet HD-40307g, the descendants of the original 600 pioneers never lose sight of the distant goal, meeting unexpected challenges and moments of joy.
Kesta is a scientist driven to find a vaccine against the virus that turned many into bloodthirsty monsters, believing her husband, Tim, is still alive.
