The only non-stop route connecting the US and Christchurch, New Zealand, was disrupted when United Airlines' flight was diverted to Hawaii for a crew change.
Christchurch Airport manager Justin Watson expressed optimism about the new route, stating, 'It's a stepping stone into the US and beyond, supports our exporters, and reinforces our role as a hub for Antarctic operations.'
On Monday, Flight UA731 from Christchurch to SFO was expected to take 13 hours and ten minutes but was diverted to Hawaii, causing passengers to have an unexpected stay.
United Airlines confirmed the crew change necessity due to legal limits on work hours for flight crews, which resulted in 203 passengers being rebooked on a later flight.
